Brown Polarized
reaction of alkenes?
What is the observation when bromine water is added to an alkene? I know it will give a positive reaction in the exposure of sunlight, but I'm not so sure about the color observed. Does the brown color of bromine decolourise or polarizing? What is the exact different between polarize and depolarize?
Adding bromine to unsaturated hydrocarbon, bromine is added to a double bond, forming a di-bromo compound. The solution will change red-brown to colorless bromine is consumed. Light polarization occurs when the random overall orientation of the electromagnetic energy is aligned. It can detect polarized light with a polarized lens – which only allows a certain orientation of the light to pass. Rotating the polarized lens, the lens seem to grow darker and more clear as it rotates 180 degrees. It will be dark when the lens is polarized at right angles (90 °) to the orientation of the source of polarized light.
