How to negotiate car price tag?

I was at a dealership. The vendor was quoting me the price tag. What do u do to get the lower than the price? For now, I told him I thought that was high. He acted like a great deal (of course). I told him that I will continue to have a look to the various lots and on the Internet, or it could return when running a promotion. He then called another person, a manager or something, but I said the same. Nobody was going to come with better prices. (quoting a MSRP of approx 27k for a toyota prius 2008)
